Rewiring

With electrical wiring hidden away in the roof, walls, or under the floor where you can’t easily see it, it can be hard to know the state of your home’s electrical wiring; whether it has been recently updated and is safe or if it’s not up to Australian standards, posing a hazard to your family. Poor wiring can also cause damage to expensive electrical appliances over time.

Homes with cotton or rubber insulated wiring should be rewired. Cotton and rubber insulated cabling ceased being used in homes and commercial properties in the 1970’s as the insulation a much shorter life span than the plastic insulated cabling we use today.  As wiring deteriorates, it begins to pose a fire risk and the risk of electrocution.

We recommend you have your wiring assessed by one of our qualified electricians, particularly if you answer yes to any of the following;

  • Your home is fitted with single insulated wiring & steel conduits
  • The safety switch trips frequently
  • Your house was built in the 1970’s or earlier
  • There is only one circuit for all your power outlets
  • Your home is fitted with rubber or cotton insulation
  • Socket outlets are over heating
  • You are renovating and can see the wiring is deteriorating/ non-regulation.

What does rewiring involve and what is the cost?

If you have your home rewired, we will renew powerpoints and switches if required and replace ALL of the old wiring. When we inspect the condition of the wiring in homes, we regularly come across instances of ‘lazy work’, whereby at some point in the past, an electrician has ignored or neglected to replace deteriorated wiring in spots that are not easily accessible. We take pride in the fact that our rewiring work is thorough and complete so no dangerous wiring is left behind. We want our customers to feel the peace of mind in knowing heir home’s electrical systems are safe and meet Australian standards.

This is often done in conjunction with a switchboard upgrade where we replace old fuses or circuit breakers for individual safety switches. The switchboard backing on these installations were usually asbestos which we remove safely if the switchboard is being upgraded. Typically the earthing would also require upgrading at this point.

Each home is different, our electricians will come to your home to assess your wiring and will provide a free, personalised and obligation-free quote for the components that need fixing.
