What’s the difference between a standard electrician and a Level 2 electrician in NSW?

If you’ve ever needed electrical work done at your home or business, you may have come across the term “Level 2 electrician” and wondered how that’s different from a regular electrician. The truth is, while both are qualified professionals, a Level 2 electrician has specialised training, certifications, and authorisations that allow them to work on more complex and high-risk parts of the electricity network (Ausgrid and Endevour in NSW).

In New South Wales, standard electricians can handle general electrical tasks inside your home or business; things like installing power points, lighting, or fault finding. But when it comes to connecting or disconnecting properties from the electricity grid, or working directly with overhead or underground power lines, or upgrading your switchboard, only a Level 2 electrician is licensed and authorised to take on that kind of work.

What is a level 2 electrician?

A Level 2 electrician is qualified to perform installations, repairs, and maintenance on the electricity service network that runs between your home or business and the main power grid. This includes both overhead and underground service lines. In other words,
if your property needs to be connected to the street power supply—or disconnected temporarily for renovations—it’s a Level 2 electrician who has the authority to do that safely and legally.

Local Level 2 Electricians you can trust for Sydney and the Central Coast

At Hornsby Electric, we have a team of fully qualified Level 2 electricians ready to carry out authorised electrical work across Sydney. We service the entire North Shore region, from North Sydney to Castle Hill to Berowra, some parts of the Central Coast and everywhere in between.

Our team works within the Ausgrid network and adheres to strict NSW safety regulations. Every job is performed with a high level of care and compliance to ensure both residential and commercial properties are serviced safely. Level 2 electricians are specially licensed to deal with high-voltage and potentially hazardous cables, such as street-to-home connections or underground mains.

When do you need a level 2 electrician?

You’ll need a Level 2 electrician any time electrical work involves connecting or disconnecting your premises from the main electricity network. They’re also authorised to install and maintain metering equipment and handle tasks that require working directly with the supply network.

Here are some common situations where you’ll need a Level 2 electrician:

  • Connecting power to a new property (overhead or underground)
  • Upgrading power supply, switchboards or mains
  • Disconnecting and reconnecting power for major renovations
  • Relocating switchboards or mains connections
  • Installing or removing metering equipment (including for solar setups)
  • Temporary power supply for construction sites or builders’ poles
  • Performing “live work” on active electrical lines
  • Installing or repairing overhead services using cherry pickers
  • Laying underground electrical cables

Whether you’re building, renovating, or upgrading your home or business, Hornsby Electric is here to help. Our Level 2 electricians are qualified, reliable, and ready to safely connect your property to the power network.
