Our local area is filled with beautiful character filled older homes. However older houses often have outdated and deteriorating wiring. Homes with cotton or rubber insulated wiring should be rewired. Cotton and rubber insulated cabling ceased being used in homes and commercial properties in the 1970’s as the insulation a much shorter life span than the plastic insulated cabling we use today.  As wiring deteriorates, it begins to pose a fire risk and the risk of electrocution.

With electrical wiring hidden away in the roof, walls, or under the floor where you can’t easily see it, it can be hard to know the state of your home’s electrical wiring; whether it has been recently updated and is safe or if it’s not up to Australian standards, posing a hazard to your family. Poor wiring can also cause damage to expensive electrical appliances over time.

We recommend you have your wiring assessed by one of our qualified Electricians, particularly if you answer yes to any of the following;  your home is fitted with single insulated wiring & steel conduits , the safety switch trips frequently, your house was built in the 1970’s or earlier, there is only one circuit for all your power outlets, your home is fitted with rubber or cotton insulation, socket outlets are over-heating, you are renovating and can see the wiring is deteriorating/ non-regulation.

Having a home that has safe electrical systems in place is paramount to the safety and wellbeing of the people living in your home. For all new customers, we conduct a FREE safety inspection, checking your homes electrical systems to grade the efficiency and safety of them. We inspect smoke alarms, to check if they are working, we check powerpoints as well as other things, and also make recommendations to improve not only the safety, but the efficiency of your electrical systems in your home. The safety of our customers is our top priority.

Many homes in our local area don’t have working smoke alarms. That’s because most smoke alarms expire and stop working after ten years. If you have not changed yours within ten years, it’s definitely time to get them checked and possibly replaced with a brand new set-and-forget model!

Switchboards are the electrical heart of your home, distributing the power supply from the street to the lights and appliances in your home. To keep your family safe, switchboards should be regularly maintained. A staggering 40 percent of the 4,500 house fires in NSW each year are caused by electrical faults which could have been prevented had the switchboards been inspected by a licensed Electrician and if required updated for safety.

Safety switches protect you and your family from earth-leakage faults the most common cause of shock and electrocution by isolating electricity to affected circuit(s) within just 30 milliseconds, less than the time it takes for your heart to complete a full beat cycle. Many switchboards are outdated and if left unchecked leave the residents with unnecessary risk of electrical accidents, including fire, electric shock, and electrocution.

Here are some of the common reasons you might need your switchboard inspected or upgraded:

  • You are installing new or replacing old appliances with newer or more powerful ones.
  • Your circuits keep tripping.
  • You are adding new power points to your home.
  • Your switchboard has not been upgraded and you have ceramic fuses.
  • You have circuit breakers, and you don’t have safety switches.
  • You are renovating and your switchboard does NOT meet current Australian Standards for safety (AS3000:2018 Wiring rules).
  • You hear buzzing or can smell burning coming from your switchboard.
  • Your lights flicker or dim for no apparent reason.

Safety switches gives protection from earth leakage faults, the leading cause of serious injury or electrocution in our homes. They are usually installed on the main switchboard or a sub-board. They work by monitoring the flow of current through the circuit they’re installed on. If the safety switch detects an earth-leakage fault, a difference in the residual current returning on the circuit, will switch off the power supply within 30 milliseconds, saving you from electric shock or even electrocution. We urge all homeowners to have working safety switches protecting all circuits in their home.  We need safety switches to protect us when we need them most. Did you know safety switches should be tested monthly? Not sure how? Give us a call and we’ll be happy to help.

A licensed Electrician will be able to fix and repair electrical faults and install or replace electrical equipment in the most effective way that ensures it complies with Australian safety standards. Having a licensed Electrician complete electrical work in your home or premises will minimise the incidence of overloading and nuisance tripping. Investing in getting the job done properly in the first place is not only the safest measure, but it can also very often save time and money later on that would otherwise be spent on expensive repairs.

Yes, we offer ceiling fan installation and supply of a great range of ceiling fans. Whether you want a wall operated, or remote control operated, with or without a dimmable light, we have an excellent range of ceiling fans available. We love ceiling fans as they are a very efficient way to cool a room. They can be used all year round. They make a room feel up to 8 degrees cooler and cost the fraction of the price of air conditioning. By using them in winter, you can save as much as 15 percent on heating costs that will improve the distribution of heat in the room, thermostats can be turned down. When you do that, your heater runs less often, consuming less energy. Our range includes ceiling fans suitable for indoor and outdoor use.

Yes, our licensed Electricians provide safety switch installation and upgrades to ensure homes are safe and meet Australian standards. Safety switches should be installed on each circuit and are designed to turn off the electricity supply in 30 milliseconds if an earth-leakage fault is detected. Please get in contact if your switchboard needs to be upgraded with safety switches.

Having a safe and up-to-date electrical system in your home is essential to the safety and well-being of your family. Outdated faulty, deteriorated electrical systems/installations (including wiring, power points and switchboards), can result in electric shock, fire, and sometime electrocution. If you have a licensed Electrician do a safety check in your home or premises, they should inspect your switchboard to ensure all the safety switches are up to date and working, check your smoke alarms are all effective and within their expiry date and working, checking your lights are energy efficient. Hornsby Electric offers a free safety assessment for all new customers.

Do you have the old porcelain fuses and circuits that are unprotected from earth-leakage on your current fuse box or switchboard? If you do, they are not safe as they don’t protect you from electric shock or electrocution from the most common type of electrical fault (earth-leakage). To be compliant and ensure your family’s safety, homes should have individual safety switches, one on each circuit, to protect against electric shock or electrocution. Safety switches work by monitoring the flow of current through the circuit they’re installed on. When the flow is normal/balanced, the switches are disengaged, but if the safety switch detects an earth-leakage fault, a difference in the residual current returning on the circuit, will switch off the power supply within 30 milliseconds, saving you from electric shock or even electrocution.

We urge all homeowners to have working safety switches protecting all circuits in their home.

Many house fires are the result of wire insultation melting and leaving the electrical wires dangerously exposed. The problem is, the wiring is often out of sight, in the roof or wall cavities. Wiring can melt due to arcing. If you can hear buzzing, crackling or popping from your electrical wiring, this may be happening. Older homes with older electrical installations very often do not have the capacity for our modern-day power loads. Having your home’s wiring checked is essential for the safety of your home.

Some common electrical faults are short circuiting and overloading power systems, appliance failure, deterioration of electrical wiring, tripping lights or power points and earth leakage faults. For all repairs and replacements of electrical installations, you need a licensed Electrician to help you.

Some common give away signs that your home may need rewiring are flickering lights, lightbulbs that blow, sparking or discoloured power points, tripping circuits with no apparent appliance as a culprit, old switchboards with porcelain fuses, or if your home was built in or before the 1970’s. Many homes have wiring in poor condition. Electrical wiring standards have changed a lot in 30 years, and likewise our energy consumption these days is a lot higher than it was even twenty years ago so wiring that hasn’t been checked for at least twenty years could well be putting way too much pressure on your electrical installation (at the best) and may be putting people’s lives at risk (at worst). Rewiring is mostly out of sight so most families may be blissfully unaware they are living in a home that is in fact putting their family at risk of electrical hazards.

An RCD is a safety switch are an types that we haven’t really used in decades. The new type is known as an RCBO i.e., individual safety switch. We still replace RCDs (very rarely) but would usually recommend upgrading the switchboard and installing RCBOs.

RCD = protects multiple circuits. The biggest downside is that if you have a fault on just one circuit you lose power to all the circuits that the RCD is protecting.

RCBO = protects an individual circuit. The greatest benefit is that when you have a fault on one circuit you only lose power on one circuit. A far more modern and superior installation.

Our licensed Electricians provide RCD or safety switch installation and upgrades to ensure homes are safe and meet Australian standards. Safety switches should be installed on each circuit and are designed to turn off the electricity supply within 30 milliseconds if an earth-leakage fault is detected. Please get in contact if your switchboard needs to be upgraded with safety switches.
