Most homeowners know they need an electrician when the lights stop working, a power point needs replacing or a new appliance is being installed. What many people don’t realise is that some electrical work requires a specialist known as an ASP Level 2 electrician.
If you have received an Ausgrid defect notice, need a new power connection, are upgrading your switchboard or require work on the power supply to your property, a standard electrician may not be authorised to carry out the work.
Understanding the difference can save you time, money and frustration.
What is a Level 2 electrician?
An ASP (Accredited Service Provider) Level 2 electrician has additional training and accreditation that allows them to work on the electrical network connecting your property to the street supply. This includes work that a standard licensed electrician is not legally permitted to perform.
Level 2 electricians are authorised to:
- Connect and disconnect properties from the electricity network
- Install, repair and replace overhead service lines
- Install underground consumer mains and service cables
- Upgrade and relocate metering equipment
- Install solar metering
- Upgrade switchboards and consumer mains
- Provide temporary power supplies for construction sites
- Rectify electrical defect notices issued by network providers such as Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy
This work touches the power network itself. Strict rules apply. Only an accredited Level 2 electrician is allowed to do it.
